[vlc] rtsp authentication

Hi vlc users,

does anybody has any experience with authentication in rtsp session? I have
an AXIS video server which requires this. When I enter the command:
"rtsp://192.168.10.2/dir1/video.avi"  it returns: 'cannot handle DESCRIBE
respons: RTSP/1.0 401 Unauthorized'.
When I use Quicktime a window pops up requesting user and password. Does
vlc support this feature?

I also tried entering user and password  in the MRL like this but this:
"rtsp://user:password@192.168.10.2/dir1/video.avi"  but this also exits with
the same error message.

any help on this one is very much appreciated,
