[vlc] no video window?

stupid things without expert suggestions.)

Hello. I am a gentoo linux user just compiled VLC from source (not 
looking for trouble - in gentoo linux everything compiles from source). 
Currently vlc plays music just fine. On playing video (I tried both 
mpeg2 and DIV3 in avi format), only the sound, no video, no error 
message. Look into format window my video format and size is correctly 
detected.

This is the first time I try using VLC, so perhaps I didn't do some 
basic homework for the video? I tried XV, X11, OPENGL video output, none 
of them produce video (to make sure I restarted VLC each time I change 
video output). Do I need to send a screenshot?

I read the play-howto without digging out any useful information:(

I am using gentoo-linux-sparc 2004.3 running gnome 2.6, kernel 2.4. VLC 
is masked as 'unstable' package on gentoo-linux (but on vlc website 
gentoo-linux part, it's suggested I install 'unstable' version). Here is 
my emerge -info information (useful for other gentoo people detect my 
problem)
