[vlc] vlc without gui ?

Hello All
I would like to know if it is possible to launch VLC without any GUI.

I heard about the ncurses mode but i have a cant use it . When i start 
vlc with the -I ncurses the message "Service "org.freedesktop.Hal" does 
not exist" appears in the console.

Could anyone help me ?
