[vlc] Receiving streams over SSL/HTTP ?

Is it possible for VLC to lead network streams over SSL/HTTP?
Accesing a video stream over plain HTTP works fine, using:
   vlc -vvv http://localhost/foo.avi

However, accessing the same stream over SSL sends VLC into an 
uncontrolled loop, eating all CPU resources and freezing the client:

   vlc -vvv https://localhost/foo.avi

Now, is SSL supported in VLC?

PS: I'm using version 0.8.4a on Windows XP.
