[vlc] VLC over Ubuntu

Does anyone have an idea how to install VLC over an Ubuntu Linux OS...? 
When I choose the way I'm suppoed to the proper VLC packages (which are 
metionned as installable), Ubuntu tells me it has to install/de-install 
things first, and I haven't been able to make it actually do that.

Has anyone succeeded yet, who would be willing to share the experience?
