Then you need to find a player that support the network protocol that
you use. (which is, btw ?)

And to be honest, for the dummy windows user, was is more simple:

* install a codec and a plugin to support your protocol ( and cross your
 finger very hard that it doesn't conflict with other codec)
* Install VLC (One download, 4 click to install)
