I had (or have, haven't tried for a while) a similar problem. Xorg is
configured with two screens. If the cable of my second screen is not
connected to the nvidia-card vlc crashes when trying to play videos with
the xvideo output. I think switching to OpenGL was working. I did a lot
of recompiling until I found out it was a "hardware" (cable not
connected :-) ) problem...

However I suspect that the nvidia driver is buggy in this case...
