[vlc] codec invalid on my video files

Used Sanyo C6 camcorder for family reunion.  Then Ulead program would lock up when editing mpeg4.  Went on Internet to see what else I could try.  Downloaded and installed VLC, and viewed family reunion video files.  But when I try to go back to Ulead, to burn to DVD, it says "codec invalid."

I did not make extra copy of reunion videos, before running demo version VLC.  (I will know better from now on.)  How can I change back these video files to the way they were, before the traffic cone embeded itself onto the files?  Thanks
