Here's some words:

There is already a vlc version for linux on ps3.
Get Yellow Dog Linux.
You should be able to use the RPM Fusion vlc package for ppc using the
related RPMFusion system-release

But could can also use Fedora. ( Fedora should work on ps3 despite not
been specially targetted for it)
Using YDL 6.1 is the speciallized distro for this...

please use rpmfusion.org to report problem on the ppc vlc package from there.
