my 2 cents: have a try at unstable VLC (0.9.0) which you can get on
http://nightlies.videolan.org as a package for Ubuntu 7.10 .
"Unstable" VLC may be less unstable than 0.8.6.

To be sure: you aren't using java bindings of VLC, but the mozilla
plugin, right ? Because java bindings aren't built by default, so you
would have to compile it yourself
