[vlc] vlc-0.8.6c-4.lvn7 streaming and ffmpeg issues

Hi there! I am new to the wonderful world of vlc (using it as part of my undergraduate level project), and would appreciate your help. I installed vlc-0.8.6c three weeks ago on linux FC7 and have been struggling to correct two issues. Please assist if you can..

1) I tried streaming a 15sec .mpg video over UDP from server to client on the same host. The received video at the client is a total jumble of frames. Without streaming, the playback on-screen is perfectly fine. With streaming, the video plays fine on the server app as well but is a mess on the client. I had to force the client process to quit after some time. i've pasted the message log of the server and client. Have I installed any wrong/conflicting versions of any dependency or is it more complicated than that?

2) .avi and .mp4 files cannot be played on my vlc. The main error is 

main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `MJPG'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I've installed ffmpeg-0.4.9-0.37.20070503.lvn7... What else should I be doing?
