[vlc] mingw32 cross compile debugging

Hi,
I am cross-compiling vlc on linux for windows with mingw32 and I am
wondering what debugger I can use to debug.  Visual Studio seems to be
of no use.  A google search seems to indicate that I need to run the
executable on linux with wine and use mingw's gdb for windows.  Is
this the best option or does anyone know how I can debug while running
natively on windows?
