[vlc] Can't play streaming qtl format

I have asked this question at the VLC forum and did not receive any answers.
I am attempting to listen to a radio station which uses the quicktime
streaming format .qtl which it says is mp4. When I attempt to open the http
url in VLC nothing happens. I can play the stream with media player classic
bundled with the quicktime alternative software. OS is WinXP

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
