[vlc] Video smoothing?

Dear Sir/Madam:

Is there a way to enable some kind of video smoothing in VLC 0.9.8a and/or
0.9.6a?  I have been using VLC 0.8.6a and when I play mp4 files, the video
looks smooth.  However, when I play the same video in 0.9.8a and 0.9.6a, the
video is pixelated.  In other words, I can see blocks/pixels in the video.
Please help.  Thank you.
