VLC 0.9.8a on WinXP (though think it is irrelevant)

One of my mates asked how he can rip audiotrack from DVD-Video to his
player.
I wanted to suggest VLC. Thanks heaven i did not do it and tried instead
myself.

Let us not talk of complex formats like MKV with a muber of audio streams
an subtitles sreams (though AFAIr DVD can have both).

Let's take simplistic AVI with 1 video + 1 audio.

Quite a usual file, isn't it ?

So i just try to save audio-track into ogg-file.

0) Open dialog, when i paste filename in different folder than it was, i
expect it (at least in Windows) to change foder and nexttime open in that
folder, where the opened file was. It does not happen. But its not on
topic of transcoding.

1) i want only quickly get audio out, so i check Audio and select Vorbis
format and press ok - diaog closes and nothing happens. Just nothing.
Ok, i did not checked neither "play locally" nor "save to file", blame me.
However i expect VLC would stop me from pressing OK if i selected to do
nothing.

2) I set the file to save to and press ok. Nothing happens. Why ? Seems i
did not selected encapsulation. Again - why VLC did not required it ?

3) I selected Ogg container. And pressed ok. And now VLC started
"streaming". And as i pressed stop (i do not need all the sound, only some
part), i see the file on the disk. Yet neither payer, nor VLC itself, can
open it w/o errors. So what is the resulting format ?

Where is that videotrack appeared from ? And why it has FPS=0 then,
omitting width and height? And afteral, why audiotrack duration is below
zero ?
