[vlc] when I play a dvd on vlc media player it is green and distorted

Hi to whom it may concern

I play a dvd on the vlc media player, it plays, but has streaming vertical
lines and is on a green background, or 'green screen'
I have vlc 09.8
i am running windows Xp Pro service pack 2
I have an amd 64x2 duel core processor
4400+ 2.31 ghz 1 meg of ram
using a pioneer dvd burner/player

please help,
