[vlc] No Sound, No Help

At the recommendation of Mozilla, I recently decided to try VideoLAN. I downloaded vlc-0.9.9-win32 and installed it on my previously functioning computer. Now I have no sound. The sound card is functioning, and the display shows that sound is playing, but nothing comes out of the speakers. That situation also holds for other sound playback programs, like Nero. I don't even get sound for AOL (You've Got Mail!).

I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3. Device Manager shows that my sound card [Creative Soundblaster Live! Value (WDM)] is functioning correctly. I uninstalled your program [vlc-0.9.9-win32] using the Windows Uninstaller through the Control Panel, but sound was not restored. I rolled back the sound card driver without effect. I updated the sound card driver without effect. My attempts to view your web forums was unsuccessful, in that each time I clicked on a link that was supposed to take me to a web forum, I was directed to the overview page. I searched for other web pages, but, for the most part, was directed back to the overview page.

I then checked my computer for files that I thought might be associated with "vlc." I was surprised to find that, though Control Panel showed that VideoLAN was no longer among the programs on my computer, my hard drive search showed that there was still a file and all components of VideoLAN under Program Files, and that clicking on the .exe file would activate the program that I thought had been uninstalled. I moved the file to the Recycle Bin, and rebooted, to no effect. I obtained the latest sound card driver from the OEM web site and installed that driver again. I rebooted to no effect. I ran the diagnostic tests from Windows and the diagnostic tests from the sound card manufacturer. All tests showed that the sound system is working properly, but there is no sound. I have repeatedly verified that the "mute" box for the sound system is unchecked. I am unable to get sound from several programs which should have sound.

I am not pleased.
