[vlc] Windows Home Server

Hi - 
First of all I love VLC and use it for most of my media files. 
I have recently added a mediasmart server with windows home media. 
When the content is on the server and I try to access the media from a client pc running vlc, well, it does not run smoothly and it stalls. 
Is there a remedy for this? Can I load vlc on the server and open the files on the server?
