[vlc] Watching Madagascar anyone?

Yesterday, I tried to watch a Madagascar DVD with VLC and it completely
failed: after selecting the dvd device, it opened the "viewer" window,
which stayed black for a few seconds and then immediately closed the
"viewer" window.

Any idea what might be going on?
This is on a PowerPC running MacOSX with the latest release of VLC
I could find on the website (0.9.8a).

PS: I do watch DVDs using VLC regularly on that machine.  Also Apple's
"DVD Player" did play this particular DVD just fine (sadly).
