[vlc] how to update the program - finding the right file to download into

Once the program resides on my computer, and I need to now try and update
it, I know how to find it, but I do not have any idea of the many files
under program files which will accept a download file to update the program
- so far I've tried about a dozen of the files and none of them work?

 

And my program keeps on crashing over and over again - I've had it all of
about 30 minutes. 

 

And I've read thru all the FAQ's.
