[vlc] MP4 DOES NOT PLAY in VLC

I have been using VLC with no problems, until now.
I bought a new Sony Camera, which formats movies in MP4
These movies will not play in VLC (or windows media player))
The SOUND plays OK, but the picture is frozen or moves sporadically
I suspect this has something to do with a missing CODEC....  Can a MP4 CODEC be added to VLC so my movies will play?  How do I do this.
