[vlc] Saving a stream to multiple AVI files

Is it possible to set VLC to take a MMS stream and to save it into a set of fixed size (in seconds) avi files ?
I have played about with vlc and I could only find something like:
vlc mms://207.253.121.82/TVAStream --sout file/avi:tva.avi --run-time 60
my problem is that it is virtually impossible for me to start another session of vlc upon completion and to pick up exactly where it left off. What I would like is a configuration parameter to specify the maximum length of time per avi. I can work around the other details.
Any idea?
