[vlc] Streaming question that I can't find answer to in forums!

Hi

I have a Windows machine, with a share on a folder containing all my music and video.  I download VLC to my macbook pro and want to watch the video.  The buffer is too small, or something like that, because the video jumps, stops and starts erratically.

I've read something on the web about changing it in the preferences dialog, but these posts are from pre 2005 and the dialog appears to have changed quite a bit.

Not being much of a video expert, I can't find it - what should I do?
