[vlc] wrong signature

My VLC (v. 1.1.0-pre1) on launching prompts to download an update to v. 2.0, but when the update has almost finished dowloading al alert advises that the signature is faulty in some way and download/install cannot be completed.  On an Intel iMac with OS X 10.6.3.
MacUpdate and VersionTracker do not show a v. 2.0 being available at all.

How do I access the new update if there is one, please?
