[vlc] absolutely no audio

Hi,

It's been several months that audio is gone from VLC in my AMD64 Debian
unstable system.  I've tried the various audio output options in
"Preferences" and resetting them to default values, to no avail.  Sound
works perfectly in the desktop (KDE here), and other apps like Miro,
Totem, and Kplayer.  Are there other Debianites that might know what may
know what the proper incantation is?  Thanks.
