[vlc] Debug the source code of VLC

Hi,
I encountered some problems when getting a real-time video with VLC. I guess that there is something wrong with the VLC.  Therefore in order to find out the answers to the problems, i intend to debug the source code of VLC. My question is: how can i start debugging the source code of VLC, use which tools, and how to use the tools? Thanks for your answer.
