[vlc] VLC and .mkv movies

My computer is using Windows XP and VLC 1.1.11.

I am very pleased with the playing of most movies by VLC.  However I cannot play movies recorded with .mkv suffix - the screen blanks out and, although I can hear the audio, no picture appears.  

Is there any program/driver I can download which would allow VLC to play .mkv movies?
