[vlc] libvlc calls hang

I am using the libvlc library to embed VLC players into my application. 
I have some cases where the libvlc_media_player_stop and 
libvlc_video_set_aspect_ratio  calls will hang and never return. My best 
guess is that they hang on the call to lock_input. Any guesses why this 
should hang and never return?
