There is also the well-known HSQLDB, but I can't say what's better. An
Hibernate layer would help too.
However, I'm wondering if the game is worth the candle. More
dependencies, more configuration lines, more code, etc. And no more
human-readable XML file. Is the "complex SQL query" feature really a
need?
I'd tend to conclude a migration to a database engine is not a priority.
