Hmm, when watching such a stream, vlc generates messages as follows:

[00000160] main video output error: picture to display 0x836c8e4 has invalid 
status 4
[00000160] main video output error: picture to date 0x836c8e4 has invalid 
status 4
[00000160] main video output error: picture to display 0x836c6ec has invalid 
status 4
[00000160] main video output error: picture to date 0x836c6ec has invalid 
status 4

Investigating more....
