I made some testing with different options
in x264 revision 86 (month or so old, sorry).
The results are online here:
http://www.ee.oulu.fi/~tuukkat/mplayer/tests/x264test2/readme.html
Or the parent page:
http://www.ee.oulu.fi/~tuukkat/mplayer/tests/readme.html
The page contains EPS images, so Konqueror or some other
browser which can display them is recommended, or otherwise
download the images for local browsing (recommended anyway).
For your convenience, conclusions are reproduced here:

The best parameters for x264 are what one could naively expect:
./x264 -c -r 5 -A all --subme 5 -o test.264 input-352x288.yuv 352x288
If you need to save from encoding time, first set subme=4. Then try
cranking down Analyze and Reference frames, but better not to touch Loop
filter or Cabac, because it helps little coding speed.
