I used "configure --enable-debug" which enables -g anyway. Replacing -O4 with 
at -O1 or -O0 solves it. Maybe the configure script should disable 
or reduce optimizations in debug mode?

Or should this be specific to my setup? I'm using gcc 3.4.6.
