because of these lines in configure:
	elif [ "$SYS" = FREEBSD -o "$SYS" = NETBSD ]; then
	ASFLAGS="$ASFLAGS -f aoutb"

gotcha with aoutb reproducable under 6.0-RELEASE and 6.1-PRERELEASE
