I'm not sure what to do here; doing so would require more memory and
more CPU time, while the scenecut-related stuff that I added was
completely free.

The algorithm I wrote would cause significant slowdown if used in that
case (you'd pretty much only want the algorithm to trigger on a
scenecut).
