[x264-devel] Interlaced field order question

I've come across a video that I need to re-encode that has a strange 
structure.  The video is currently encoded as high bitrate mpeg2, and 
the field order changes frequently from TFF to BFF to non-interlaced.

I'm wondering what the best approach to transcoding this video with 
libx264 is?  Do I need to call x264_encoder_reconfig each time the field 
order changes?  And when it does change, will I have to force an I frame?
