I'm not so sure of this. ATSC is the group that defines US terrestrial DTV. 
It uses MPEG2 but I think it uses QAM modulation unlike DVB. Hauppauge 
makes different cards to receive DTV and DVB. My understanding is that the 
boards are very close, so I may drop the $ and buy one and try to figure 
out what I need to do to get it to work. I know there is a driver that 
supports both, so that's very hopeful.

Thank you so much for the info on not using the s-video outputs. You 
mention some set top boxes. which ones do you know that would work with VLS 
in this mode? I had ruled these out in my mind because I assumed they would 
not work with local software. A set top box would make the perfect demo.

I'm out for a few days, but will get back to this as soon as I get back in 
town.
