[streaming] ready to try to make ATSC dance with VLS

Hello,
A while back I asked about getting the ATSC terrestrial broadcast to work
with VLS. I found a card that can do all the hardware parts I want
(www.pchdtv.com) and have one in my system. I have successfully made it to
stream using a simple program that was included with the card, a fifo and
vlc.
Now comes the time to try to make it dance with VLS. The ideal situation
would be to have the fifo out in the file system, and have VLS start the
program with the right parameters (device and tuner channel) and open the
fifo for read. On stopping the stream, VLS could either stop the program
explicitly, or the program dies when the fifo reader closes it's
connection. Some interlocking on things would be a nice extra (the tuner
can't be told to tune to 2 different channels at the same time,) but that's
not important for my current purposes.
My reading of the documentation does not show any capability to have VLS
run a program as part of the startup (it doesn't matter the order of
starting the program and opening the fifo, but I tend to open the fifo
first and have it stall until the stream fires up.
How can I do this cleanly? I can certainly do some of the work externally
to VLS, but that defeats the most of the purpose of the configured channels
and programs.
thanks,
jerry
