In addition to this, what do you plan on using to display the stream on
the plasma screen?

Videolan  could indeed  be used  for  such applications  in my  opinion.
However, be aware that for this kind of purpose, support of multicast on
the network would be a big  help (althoug simple broadcast could perhaps
be sufficient in such an application), and that a MPEG2 stream often has
a 3-5 Mbit/s bitrate.  You then would have to check  if your dsl network
meets these requirements
