On Windows, any  directshow compatible device should  work (webcams have
been  reported to  work).  The same  is  true for  sound  card. I  think
(almost) all soundcards have directshow compatble drivers.

On linux, any  v4l compatble webacam should work. If  you're planning to
use an acquisition card with an  integrated encoding chip on linux, have
a look at the Haupaugge PVR 250
