 Some operators have "transparent" HTTP proxies between GPRS clients and
 the Internet.  I would try _another_ port than 80 (I know you were told
 otherwise to avoid blocked ports), and I think you should try an UDP
 transport, HTTP is over TCP and requires to ACK every frame and won't
 tolerate any loss.

 Besides, you should turn verbose messages on the client to see what's
 happening in the Messages window, and you should run a network trace
 (for example with Ethereal) to see packets on the network.
