Sorry I haven't had the time to test vlc 0.4.2 on windows.
VLC 0.4.2 underwent major changes to the threads synchronisation code, I 
guess this could be the cause of the problem...

If you've got some time on your hands to debug this, I would suggest you to 
install drmingw on your windows computer: 
(http://mefriss1.swan.ac.uk/~jfonseca/gnu-win32/software/drmingw/)
You'll also need to build vlc with full debug info.
