My apology for the "fair" comment. It wasn't intended in bad way, I was
merely establishing if it was worth me continuing with the effort.

It did the trick and now I have a fully working vlc 0.6.0 under RH7.3. It is
a great product.

No it isn't fair. As Eric already told you, "cd libmpeg2; make" will be
just enough to compile libmpeg2, you do not need the whole mpeg2dec.
