Hi Mark.
There is another way to build these libs under OSX, which should be 
much more reliable:
Go to the extras/contrib/ directory of the vlc-trunk, run "./bootstrap" 
and afterwards either "make src" or "make bin". "make src" is 
suggested, because "make bin" is quite outdated, but it takes much 
longer, since it builds everything from source (with applying various 
patches, which should secure the compilation).

Please try to compile VLC again after that. You will need to 
re-configure and perhaps to re-bootstrap before doing that.
