Ben,
I agree it would be weird to have that function if one only used VLC while
they sat in front of their computer, when the duration is right there on
the player control. However, it's extremely handy if you have the player
window full screen on a TV. You're watching said TV across the room or in
another room away from your computer, and you want to know how far into a
video you are (or how much time is remaining), just like the "Display"
feature on a set-top player. Granted it's pretty simplistic right now,
and I take it that's the point you're trying to make, right? :)
You've given me something to work on, though. I'll see what I can do to
improve the function (i.e. make it more let a set-top player display).
