I just tested again and I was wrong. MPlayer plays the audio from an
MPEG2-TS file (from hard drive) without problems. The applications
that stutter are:

  - vlc 0.7.2 (FC2 rpm)
  - vlc 0.7.2 (compiled from source)
  - vlc 0.8.0-test2 (compiled from source)

The audio is standard layer-2 audio. MPlayer is using mp3lib to
decode it. How do I specify alternative audio decode libs to vlc?

I've looked in vlc -H --advanced but haven't seen the right option.
