Ok, now, instead of just whining, could you please calmly summarize your
point ? 

I don't know if you have looked at the implementation, but as all this
version stuff is not introduced in COPYRIGHT_MESSAGE, there are no
problems with macros as you thought there would be.

The only drawback here is that when you ask for a complete make (make in
a subdirectory or make with a specific target won't invoke it), you have
the update of the version file and its compilation, which approximately
needs ... well, maybe 2 or 3 seconds on decent hardware.

So, if it really SUCKS, please tell us why
