I am not arguing with having version numbers and build date.

My problem is with the current implementation, namely, as I already 
said :

* Build time minutes and seconds in the version file are meaning given 
the time to build VLC as a whole. The underlying problem is that it 
prevents proper dependency implementation; version.c is bound to change 
at every iteration.

* When VLC is built from "svn export" or from a tarball, the SVN version 
is replaced with a helpless "exported" text. I do expect that, at 
least, say most Linux packagers, will use a tarball, won't they?
