   - how exactly is expanding $@ in rules "clean up"?
   - you added vlc-config to BUILT_SOURCES and removed the dependency
     of $(SOURCES) on vlc-config, which means that vlc-config is
     removed after a "make clean" and almost all targets fail to
     build.
   - you removed many uses of $(top_builddir) which were there to
     clarify that the argument is in the build directory.
