If you want to reuse an existing format, you could have a look at the
pango markup language
( http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/pango/PangoMarkupFormat.html ),
which can be seen as a small subset of HTML. It can be perceived as
overkill, but is the most extensible system for this task IMO.
