Debian at least don't have the new API.
I know that they plan to have 2.x in fc7
Actually 2.x is still in release candidate phase according to the
sourceforge page. But it seems it has been so for at least 6 mounths so
it should be getting quite stable

Are the 2 APIs very different ? Would it be possible to have the module
supporting both with some #ifdef LIBDC1394_API_1 and co ?

NO afaik

as i said earlier i think it's abit early to drop 1.x completly. we have
at least to wait that 2.X is released
